Professor Sean Smith

Sean is Chair of Future Construction at the School of Engineering and Director of the Centre for Future Infrastructure at the University of Edinburgh. He leads a number of projects involving interdisciplinary teams and systems and is programme lead for the MSc in Future Infrastructure, Sustainability & Climate Change.

Over 25 years his research for the construction sector has been utilised by seven government departments, multiple industry organisations, supported over 300 companies on projects and over £340 billion of UK infrastructure assets have incorporated his engineering and technical designs. His joint research with colleagues has led to 5 patents utilised in 17 construction products which are manufactured in the UK.

Sean chairs the Scottish Research Partnership in Engineering for Infrastructure and Environment, UoE lead for UKCRIC, an invited Fellow of the UK Clean Growth Network and has been advisor to CEN and ISO standards committees. He is a non-exec director of Robust Details Ltd, has developed international research and knowledge exchange partnerships with over 40 countries and is an external examiner for the University of Cambridge construction and engineering management programme.
