INT05 - Wood Science Fundamentals
This learning scenario focused on the Wood Science Fundamentals. The scenario places learners in the role of an early-stage design support team working on a small, low-rise timber building. The client is committed to using timber but lacks a technical understanding of how timber materials behave. Learners are required to support decision-making by explaining key material characteristics, including moisture interaction, movement, anisotropy, durability and fire behaviour. The course equips learners with the knowledge and confidence to respond to client questions about timber behaviour.
The teaching approach combines short, focused presentations with hands-on material investigation and guided activities and discussions. For each topic covered, a slide deck with detailed presenter notes and handouts with more detailed technical information will be made available to students/tutor. During the course, learners will handle physical samples of solid timber and participate in simple demonstrations.
All activity briefs for tutors and learners have also been prepared and are available to support delivery. This gives tutors flexibility in how they structure delivery. This learning scenario has been designed to allow tutors to select and deliver topics as standalone components. Tutors may choose the topics most relevant to their needs and use the provided resources to deliver them independently. This scenario is designed for delivery online and/or in person.
