Construct a Crane: Inclusive STEM Challenge for Schools

Construct a Crane is an inclusive, curriculum-linked STEM challenge designed for schools across the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region.

Drawing on real-world engineering in high-density regeneration and retrofit, the project invites pupils to explore the logistical and technical challenges involved in net-zero construction. The challenge is designed to make STEM learning practical, relevant and accessible, while also introducing young people to careers in sustainable construction and engineering.

Who is this for:

  • Learners

The project is aimed at pupils in P6 to S2, as well as the teachers who support and deliver the challenge in class. It is particularly targeted at schools in areas of high deprivation to help broaden participation and ensure equitable access to STEM learning opportunities.

Level / Stage :

  • Upper primary to lower secondary, with curriculum-linked activity suitable for classroom and enrichment delivery.

What was delivered

  • The project will provide class kits, teacher support materials, and guidance for delivery in schools. Activities include kit development, industry volunteer engagement, remote or hybrid judging of final models, and a teacher-facing project guide. CeNZ-HighDB branding and messaging on careers and skills in sustainable construction are co-developed into the kits, the online CPD session, and supporting materials.

Outputs / Resources

  • Curriculum-linked STEM challenge kits.

  • Industry volunteer input for mentoring and judging.

  • Branded project materials featuring CeNZ-HighDB messaging.

  • Final models and pupil presentations from participating schools.

Impact

  • The project reached up to 151 schools and around 600+ pupils through Scottish Government-funded expansion in Edinburgh, SE Scotland, Orkney and Shetland Islands.

  • Support equitable access to STEM by targeting schools in areas of higher deprivation.

  • Helps pupils understand how engineering, construction and net-zero innovation connect to real jobs and future career pathways.

Next steps

  • Continue roll-out of the challenge, expand participation through funded partnerships, and use pupil and teacher feedback to strengthen future STEM delivery.
