Timber in Construction Skills
Accelerating the timber transition
Delivering new practical training, pathways and upskilling for the timber construction transition.
We’re building the skills system the timber sector needs. Backed by CITB, this industry-led programme aims to develop modular, employer-facing training and clear entry pathways so the UK workforce can scale timber construction safely, efficiently and with low embodied carbon.
Our mission is to:
Equip the construction workforce with new timber and offsite skills.
Create clear entry pathways for new talent.
Support the UK’s Timber in Construction Roadmap and net-zero goals.
Why it matters
Timber offers a pathway to lower-carbon buildings and faster delivery, but the sector needs people with the right skills. This programme tackles that gap by:
Building skills for a low-carbon future — Timber in Construction Skills will equip the UK workforce with the practical and management expertise to deliver low-carbon, offsite timber construction at scale.
An industry-led response to a national need — Developed by leading organisations, this collaborative project directly supports the UK Government’s Timber in Construction Policy Roadmap.
Training for today and tomorrow — Accredited courses and modular training will open clear routes for new entrants and help existing professionals reskill for modern timber MMC.
Opening pathways, widening participation — The programme promotes timber and sustainable construction careers to young people and underrepresented groups.
A foundation for sustainable growth — By closing the skills gap and embedding timber expertise, it strengthens the UK’s capacity to build more homes, cut carbon, and grow a resilient construction industry.
Building skills for a low carbon future
Led by Donaldson Timber Systems on behalf of key delivery partners — the Structural Timber Association, Timber Development UK, BE-ST, NMITE and Edinburgh Napier University — this initiative responds directly to the Timber in Construction Policy Roadmap’s call to expand skills and competency across the sector.
